Prepare a Functional Breakdown

ATICA analysis workflows require a functional breakdown in Capella's System Analysis layer. Prepare or confirm this breakdown before starting an FHA, FTA, or FMEA workflow. Choose the preparation method that matches the available project information:

  • Reuse the system engineer's existing Capella functions. If they are not suitable objective functions for the FHA, agree on the decomposition with the responsible systems engineer. Functions that are not required in the FHA table can be hidden with Show/Hide > Hide Line.
  • Create an analysis-specific functional breakdown directly in Capella.
  • Import an existing breakdown from Excel, Word, PDF, or another source through project-specific automation. Consider the effort of creating it directly in Capella before commissioning an importer.

Create a functional breakdown in Capella

  1. In the project tree, open System Analysis > System Functions.
  2. Rename Root System Function if a more specific top-level name is required.
  3. Right-click System Functions.
  4. Select New Diagram / Table... > System Functional Breakdown.

Use the table to maintain the aircraft- or system-level functions:

  • To edit a function, double-click its Name, Summary, or Description cell.
  • For a multi-line description, select the function and edit Description in the Properties view.
  • To create a function, right-click its intended parent or sibling and select Create new System Function....
  • To delete a function, right-click it and select Delete System Function....
  • To change the hierarchy, drag the function to its new parent in the function tree. Functions cannot be moved between levels directly in the table.

Export the breakdown to Word

Install M2Doc before generating the document.

  1. Download the functional-breakdown M2Doc template.
  2. Select the project's .aird file in the Capella project tree.
  3. Select Navigate > Show In > System Explorer.
  4. Copy the template into the project folder.
  5. In Capella, right-click the project and select Refresh.
  6. Right-click the template and select Initialize Documentation Configurations.
  7. Finish the wizard and confirm that a .genconf file appears.
  8. Right-click the .genconf file and select Generate Documentation.
  9. To open the generated document, right-click it and select Open With > System Editor.

Note

The supplied template is an example. Adapt or replace it when its structure does not meet the project's document requirements.
