Failure Modes and Effects Analysis

Use ATICA to define architecture elements and failure modes, create an FMEA table, or transition physical components into the Engineering, Product, and Breakdown Structure (EPBS) for Bill of Materials work.

Architecture layers

Use the following model structure for FMEA work:

  • Perform the FMEA in the Physical Architecture layer. Define the physical components, failure modes, causes, effects, detection methods, and FMEA table there.
  • Create and maintain the Bill of Materials (BOM) in the EPBS Architecture layer. Use EPBS for configuration items, parts, part failures, and failure rates.

These are the only FMEA and BOM layer approaches documented in this guide.

Workflow

  1. Prepare the functional breakdown.
  2. Prepare the Physical Architecture.
  3. Define failure modes and create an FMEA table.
  4. Create or import a BOM with failure rates.
  5. Create the FMEA in EPBS Architecture.
